LEONARDO DA VINCI – THE GENIUS IN MILAN
Monday 2 – Tuesday 3 – Wednesday 4 MAY 2016.
The Milanese period, the art work and the legends about the most admired artist of all times
Painter, sculptor, scientist, musician, expert of anatomy and physics, botanist, architect, inventor: surpassing the spirit of his time, Leonardo is today identified with the image of a genius. The artist Da Vinci was a versatile man and the enormous legacy of studies and art works he left us prove this, starting from the letter of 1482 in which he presents himself to Ludovico il Moro, the Lord of Milan.
On the basis of the exhibition at the Palazzo Reale organized by Skira and the City of Milan in the months of the Expo, Rai Com, Skira and Codice Atlantico have decided, in collaboration with Pirelli and Confagricoltura, to work together and relate the years Leonardo spent in Milan in a docufilm, touching on different aspects of his life and his art, looking deeper into the characteristics of the city at that time, the personality of the artists who were close to him, without forgetting the legends around him.
LEONARDO DA VINCI. THE GENIUS IN MILAN explores the stay of the artist in Milan, offering the chance to transform the numerous scenes of Leonardo in Milan into cinematographic tableaux: the Sforza Castle, the “Leonardo da Vinci” Museum of Science and Technology, the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Navigli, and the Vigna di Leonardo up to the famous Last Supper. The film – which will present and discuss art works such as La Belle Ferronnière, the Lady with an ermine, the Virgin of the Rocks, the Portrait of a musician, the St. John the Baptist, the Last Supper – will come to the cinemas all around the world, distributed by Nexo Digital and will be screened in Italy on 2nd, 3rd and 4th May.
With the support of Pietro Marani – curator of the exhibition – some of the leading experts of Leonardo on a global level and authors who have explored his personality – Claudio Giorgione, Maria Teresa Fiorio, Richard Schofield, Vittorio Sgarbi, Daniela Pizzagalli – a story has been created that is able to open up new perspectives and unravel extraordinary worlds.
How is it possible to narrate the complexity of the genius? Where do we start? What is the mystery that makes Leonardo the most loved, discussed and studied artist of all times? In order to answer those questions and dive in even further into the topic and the art works from the Louvre of Paris, from the National Gallery of Art of Washington and from the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, the authors Jacopo Ghilardotti and Gabriele Scotti considered it necessary to enrich the documentary, developed with the director Nico Malaspina, with some fictional scenes, involving the director Luca Lucini . The story of Leonardo in Milan has therefore been able to expand and include numerous protagonists of his Milanese stay: Ludovico il Moro, Lord of Milan, his friend and student Salaì, Beatrice d’Este, Donato Bramante, Vincenzo Bandello and many others. The historical figures will be interpreted by famous actors such as Vincenzo Amato, Cristiana Capotondi, Alessandro Haber, Gabriella Pession, Paolo Briguglia, Edoardo Natoli, Giampiero Judica, Nicola Nocella, while Sandro Lombardi will provide the narrating voice.
The film LEONARDO DA VINCI. THE GENIUS IN MILAN is produced by Rai Com, Skira and Codice Atlantico and in association with Maremosso in collaboration with Pirelli and Confagricoltura. Distributed by Nexo Digital as part of the season of “La Grande Arte al Cinema” in collaboration with MYmovies.it.
